The bride and groom are always the stars of a wedding but in Sara Mullen and Alan Benson’s case, so was their car!

“Shortly after our engagement Alan [30] bought a 1973 Ford XB Coupe – yep, a muscle car,” explains 28-year-old Sara. “He always wanted a muscle car at his wedding.”

The Brisbane pair chose Elandra Resort at South Mission Beach in Queensland for their beach wedding on October 12, 2013. “We loved that the property was essentially ours for the weekend. It was a tropical private getaway for our guests and us,” says Sara.

She says Alan made sure he also made an entrance on their special day. “Given that it was a destination wedding, none of our guests expected Alan’s coupe to be up in Mission Beach!” Sara laughs. “When our guests heard the car entering the venue they ran out to watch his entrance with the groomsmen.”

Family and friends were included as much as possible, giving readings or speeches. “We made the whole weekend an experience for our guests. The choices we made reflect our passions and our love for each other and our friends and family,” reflects Sara.

Sure to include those dearest, Sara and Alan gave their parents special roles. “Our mums signed as our witnesses, and our dads gave speeches.”

Alan’s muscle car had quite the journey to star at his wedding. “We towed Alan’s 1973 Ford XB Coupe from Perth (where we moved just before the wedding), then Brissy, then Cairns!” smiles Sara.

Sara put her DIY-hat on when it came to gifts for the guests at the reception. “With the help of my bridesmaids we made 300 wine glass charms as gifts for the girls, some of the table decorations, and I had stubby coolers made…for the boys,” she says.
