Rosie and Joe had just two simple priorities when planning their neutral, relaxed wedding.

“Number one: get married. Number two: celebrate,” Rosie explains.

“We planned our wedding with the mantras of ‘is it us?’, ‘does it make us happy’ and ‘will our guests have fun’.”

The couple chose Glen Ewin Estate in Houghton, South Australia for their March 29, 2019 wedding celebrated with 120 guests.

The eclectic and green-thinking couple say they ruthlessly culled some traditions for things that resonated with them.

“For example, my mother and father both walked me down the aisle, we did not have bonbonniere but instead donated to a children’s charity, Joe and I co-read our speech, and we did not have a bridal table but had a fabulous time mingling with our guests on long tables,” Rosie says.

They also made mindful decisions such as hiring rather than buying, choosing sustainable brands and minimising waste.

“Joe and I attempt to live an environmentally-conscious life together,” Rosie says.

“Our personal style of Rojo (our couple name) was incorporated through lawn games, vintage velvet lounge areas, custom post-ceremony gin and tonics for all, and our music choices. We walked down the aisle to a Korean classic metal, first-danced to Icelandic avant-rock and danced all night to Austrian electro-swing.

“We absolutely loved our wedding day.”

“Joe proposed by making me a ‘choose your own adventure book’ with flaps. His proposal was hidden behind our weekly Saturday night discussion about what to have for dinner. The questions started normally i.e. ‘what cuisine?’, ‘which boardgame shall we play?’, ‘wine or gin?’ At the end of the adventure the last question was ‘Will you marry me?'” Rosie recalls.

“As a former pastry chef, and cake connoisseur, the decisions about our wedding cake was incredibly important!” Rosie says. The couple went for three cakes rather than one, with two created by Heidelberg Cakes.
