Ask your mum to be an official witness.

“Many of my couples include their mum in the wedding by asking her to be an official witness,” says Sunshine Coast celebrant Dan Ford. “This is a super-sweet way to involve your mum in the big day and is even sweeter if you make it a surprise during the ceremony!”

Consider having her walk you down the aisle.

For those without a father figure, seeing a mother walking her daughter or son down the aisle is always a special moment. Even if your dad is around, why not have both parents escort you? This is a super thoughtful way to make your mum feel appreciated and included on your special day. You could even have your mum walk you part of the way down the aisle, and your dad finish the rest of the walk.

Ask her to give a reading during the ceremony.

Having your mum deliver a reading at the ceremony is a beautiful way to make her a part of the nuptials. She could either recite something you’ve chosen or come up with her own reading, whether it be a poem or a message from the heart.

“For those wanting to include their mum(s) in the wedding day, I always suggest asking her to do a reading during the ceremony,” says Perth celebrant Lou Mazzulla. “It could be a message they want to share with you or simply a reading of your choice. If you’re including a ritual like pouring of the sand or tying of ribbons, then you might like to involve her in that.”

Have your mum(s) hand over the rings.

“One of my favourite suggestions is to have the mums hold a ring each,” Michael of Simple Ceremonies Sydney explains. “They then come forward at the appropriate moment and hand their son/daughter’s ring to their new son/daughter-in-law, or whichever you prefer. It’s a special moment between the three of you and a fabulous photo opportunity!”
