Alex Caldwell describes the first time she met Troy Cudbertson as a “Sliding Doors moment”.
“We locked eyes as we passed each other outside a pub in the early afternoon – Troy was leaving the pub as I was just arriving,” Alex, 28, says. “Troy came back to the pub about half an hour later to find me and ask me out to dinner.”
Many more dinner dates followed for the Newcastle pair, who have since moved to Sydney, and Troy, 38, popped the question in 2015.
The couple took their time planning their classic Sydney wedding, walking down the aisle at Shangri-La Hotel in Sydney on February 12, 2017 in front of 80 family and friends.
“The venue was an easy choice as we had been there a few times before and absolutely love it, especially the spectacular view from the Altitude Restaurant,” Alex says of the reception venue.
The couple wed in the hotel’s Heritage Plaza, which offered an elegant and intimate space to recite their vows.
“By the time the reception started, all eyes were on us and the magical views of Circular Quay, and the rest of the night was spent on the dancefloor [courtesy of Impression DJs]” Alex says.
“We are so lucky to have had a world-class venue, breathtaking views and most importantly, a relaxed vibe created by friends and family (and suppliers who really know their stuff).”

When it came to her wedding make-up, Alex went with someone she knew. “Bianka had done my make-up for another event in the past and I love her work. She has a lot of wedding experience,” the bride says.
Alex and Troy said “I do” before celebrant Nicky Surnicky. “Nicky really listened to us and told our story on the day as if she had known us for years,” Alex says.

“Our wedding reflected us and the things we like – it had a lavish look and feel but was still very much a relaxed and fun catch-up with our friends and loved ones,” Alex says.
