“With a pick-up line of ‘Do you want to see a picture of my sponsor child?’ one could say it was love at first sight.”
That’s Nneka describing when she met Bill. The couple, aged 29 and 31 respectively, were introduced at a backyard farewell party after Nigerian-born Nneka had just moved to Melbourne from New Zealand. “Bill began to woo me with his new fancy iPhone, pictures of his new car and his African sponsor child from Zimbabwe,” explains Nneka. “I was totally oblivious to his flirting attempts and was not interested in developing a relationship.”
Instead she was focused on settling in. “My sole focus was to get a job ASAP, settle in to living in a new country, understand my new Russian athletics coach’s English and trying to make sure I got on the correct train platforms so I didn’t travel 30 minutes in the wrong direction… again! Basically, I was not interested.”
But next time she saw Bill she couldn’t deny the sparks and gave into his moves! “A proposal on the Melbourne Star three years later, purchasing our first home the month following and a wedding date that coincided with our five-year anniversary highlights the significant events in our life,” smiles the bride.
They married at their colourful cultural wedding on November 3, 2017 with a church ceremony and reception at The Sovereign in Northcote. “The emotion, energy and beauty of our wedding day was truly a reflection of our lives together,” says Nneka.

The beautiful Nneka and her glamorous bridesmaid’s had their make-up done by Runway Room.
Nneka arrived to the church in a sleek wedding Tesla by Travelux Tesla.
Nneka’s lace gown with elegant train was purchased at Fairytales Bridal Boutique. “This fit to perfection when I tried it on,” says the bride.
“It has been said that our united energy is infectious and commands the attention of all that we encounter,” beams Nneka.
Bill and his crew were decked out in suits from Formal Red, receiving praise for their service: “With three out of four groomsmen living overseas, suit fittings were left to the 11th hour, but the guys at Formal Red were very accommodating, charismatic and suited the boys up inch perfect!”
“When I saw my dress on a mannequin in the window, I insisted that it be taken off the mannequin so I could try it on,” says the bride.
The couple’s choreographed first dance nearly didn’t happen when Nneka broke her kneecap competing in triple jump! “As soon as I had ditched the crutches, I was back on the dancefloor perfecting my Michael Jackson moves,” smiles Nneka of their show to Black and White.
