Having been to some beautiful weddings for family and friends, it was now time for everyone to come to Melbourne to see Katelyn Hazelwood and David Milstein get hitched.
The couple, aged 33 and 35 respectively, married in Albert Park, the bayside suburb where they first met, on January 23, 2016. Previously they’d travelled to Hawaii and Port Douglas for their respective siblings’ weddings, gaining inspiration for their own along the way.
“Our wedding was ‘us,'” says Katelyn. “It was family and friends having a party to celebrate us and what love is to us.” The pair coined the terms ‘bridesmates’ and ‘groomsmates’ for their wedding party. “There were no rules or expectations. Just friends hanging out and feeling comfortable,” she explains.
Katelyn and David’s ceremony on the deck at Carousel was followed by a reception indoors. “The night was a big party with dancing, espresso martinis and selfie sticks dotted around to capture so many memories,” smiles Katelyn. It was extra special as the bride’s brother James married the pair. “We got a great laugh when he announced us husband and wife and said that David could now kiss his sister.”
Boutique wedding band, Connotations, got their groove on at both the ceremony and reception, and as an added bonus, the 192 guests were treated to some Neil Diamond! “David’s uncle, a Neil Diamond impersonator, got up and sang Sweet Caroline for us,” explains Katelyn.
The wine-buffs, who had guests sign wine bottles instead of a guest book, headed to Western Australia’s Margaret River for their honeymoon. “AMAZING,” recalls Katelyn. “We may have gone a bit crazy on our honeymoon and bought more than 100 bottles!”

“These were the hit of the wedding,” says Katelyn of the fun wedding cars by Samba Kombi Services.
Kateyn’s ‘bridesmates’ each chose their own white outfit from Scanlan & Theodore.
As a surprise, David’s mum and Katelyn’s nan were their witnesses.
Katelyn wore a modern peplum design from Silvana Tedesco and the boys went casual in Calibre.
Guests were kept entertained at the reception with an open-air photo booth from Little Pixel Box. “A crowd pleaser,” praises Katelyn.
