A family focus brought together Kate Merakis and her beau Andrew Blyberg.
The Melbourne couple married at their modern Greek wedding on June 27, 2015 in the presence of no less than 270 guests. Their ceremony at St Catherine’s Greek Orthodox Church in East Malvern was followed by a celebration at the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV International) in the city.
“Our wedding day was all about family,” explains Kate. “We both have Greek heritage so those customs and traditions were really important.” This meant plenty of dancing and old rituals in the home with extended family before the big moment.
“Andrew and I were married by the same priest that married my parents and baptised me and my siblings,” says Kate. They opted for a reception venue that was “a little different” and architecturally beautiful – but that could also fit 270 people! “The great hall at the NGV and its stained-glass roof was such a spectacular backdrop,” smiles the bride.
The couple danced the night away with their large family to Greek music – an important touch according to the bride. “Dancing is so much a part of how our families love to celebrate joyous occasions,” remarks Kate.
“We were just so happy and it made us feel good to see our families so happy too.”
