Thailand is relatively easy for Aussies to get to, with flights regularly running to various airports. The most popular Australian wedding destinations in Thailand are Koh Samui, Phuket, and Hua Hin — each with their unique feel.
Resorts for weddings in Thailand vary widely. Think 5-star luxury properties on private islands off the coast of Koh Samui. All-inclusive beachfront resorts with all the amenities your heart desires in Phuket. Hidden garden spaces for a peaceful wedding ceremony in Hua Hin.
Thailand is known as the land of smiles, and we can imagine you’ll be doing just that throughout your wedding celebration here.
Getting to your destination. Jetstar, Qantas, and Thai Airways offer multiple options for nonstop flights from Sydney and Melbourne to various destinations in Thailand. Phuket is the second busiest airport in the country and an easy access point for the many wedding resort venues on the island. Hua Hin is about two hours’ drive from Bangkok airport. Koh Samui is easiest to get to via a connecting flight from Bangkok.
When to go. Weather varies depending on the location you’re planning to host your wedding, but generally speaking, November to February is considered peak season for weddings in Thailand, as the weather is cool, dry, and pleasant with low humidity. This also coincides with peak tourist season, so many couples looking for a quieter experience might opt for a wedding in the shoulder seasons from March to May and September to October. June to August is the monsoon season in Thailand.
More specifically, Phuket, located in the Andaman Sea on the west coast of Thailand, experiences two distinct seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the wet season (May to October). The best time to get married in Phuket is during the dry season.
Koh Samui, located in the Gulf of Thailand on the east coast, and Hua Hin, on the west coast of the Gulf of Thailand, have slightly different weather patterns compared to Phuket: dry season (December to February), hot season (March to August), and wet season (September to November). The most ideal time to get married in these regions is during the dry season.
For Australian couples marrying overseas, we usually recommend getting the legal ceremony sorted at home prior to hopping on your flight. We particularly recommend it if you’re hosting your wedding in Thailand. Why? Save yourself a bit of stress and a lot of headache around documents. You can still have a ceremony in Thailand — it just won’t be the legally binding one.
Our Guide to Getting Legally Married in Thailand walks you through the details, but in short, you’ll be required to apply for a Certificate of no Impediment to Marriage in person in Bangkok or Phuket prior to your wedding. You’ll also have to have all of your original documents (passports, divorce/death certificates, etc.) translated and authenticated in Thailand. Then, a trip to the District Office is in order. It’s all very doable, but it takes time and effort that you’d probably prefer to spend on something else in the days leading up to your wedding.
In an ideal world, you’d have a window of 10-18 months to plan your wedding in Thailand, but we’ve been known to get together an all-star team and wedding package in less time. If you’re on the typical track, though, here’s a simplified timeline for planning your destination wedding.
10-18 Months to go. Book your destination wedding package with your Easy Weddings specialist, including your venue, accommodation, celebrant, photographer, and entertainment. Shop for your wedding attire.
12 Months to go. Send your save-the-dates via mail or email, providing a notecard or wedding website with information on accommodation and travel arrangements. Choose and order your bridal attire (ordered gowns usually require about a year’s notice).
8-10 Months to go. Confirm your flights to Thailand and arrange your honeymoon accommodation.
Finalize all flowers for the ceremony and reception. Confirm your hair and makeup artist for the wedding day.
5-8 Months to go. Chat with your Easy Weddings consultant to answer all of your questions and assist you with planning all the finer details of your wedding. Order your wedding cake if it is different from the package. Finalize the decor and furniture for the event. Finalize the outfits for your wedding party.
2-3 Months to go. Arrange bomboniere or welcome bags with special Thai goodies for your guests. Send out your wedding invitations.
2-4 Weeks to go. Easy Weddings sends your wedding day run sheet with timings and supplier contact info. Together, we’ll have a meeting with your venue event manager to discuss the details of your wedding festivities.
Thailand’s rich culture, delicious food, and beautiful settings make filling a travel itinerary without a wedding easy. We generally recommend hosting one or two wedding events and allowing guests to explore on their own for a day or two. Here are some experiences you might suggest for them:
Do I have to have a wedding date picked already?
Not necessarily. It’s usually helpful to have an idea of the time of year you’d like and whether you’re flexible about the day of the week.
How do we choose the best Thai wedding venue for our wedding?
Feel free to peruse the options online, but we’re also happy to talk you through your options. It’s often easier for us to make recommendations when we know what’s most important to you.
What’s included in your Thailand wedding packages?
Aside from our personal wedding planning services, our destination wedding packages include ceremony and reception spaces, food and beverage costs, and accommodation. Depending on which suppliers you’d like to include, your package may also come with a photographer, celebrant, entertainment, and perhaps a hair and makeup artist or videographer. Our packages are fully customisable, with all pricing explained up-front.
Why should we book with Easy Weddings?
We’ve designed our destination wedding packages specifically for Australian couples just like you. Our team has a combined roster of 50+ years’ of experience in weddings and travel, and we’ve worked with thousands of 5-star wedding suppliers to bring couples’ wedding ideas to life. Our wedding packages allow you to streamline your wedding planning and have one point of contact for everything from your venue booking to your individual wedding suppliers, all under just one payment system using AU dollars.
Is there a minimum or maximum guest count?
Our minimum guest count is 35 guests, but we don’t have a max. That said, your resort options may become more limited if you’re planning to host over 250 guests.
Can we get legally married in Thailand?
Yes. As long as your marriage would be legally recognised in Australia, your Thai marriage license will be recognised. That said, we usually recommend getting the legal stuff done in Australia instead. Read our Guide to Thailand Wedding Ceremonies for more insight.
