Bali Destination Wedding Guide

Bali’s gorgeous beaches, waterfalls, rice fields, temples, and rich cultural icons make it an unforgettable place to explore. But the warm hospitality and range of reliable 5-star resorts make Bali a popular destination for Australians hosting weddings overseas.

You’ll find resorts with glass-walled chapels, clifftop terraces overlooking the sea, wedding ceremony aisles that float atop infinity pools, and lotus gardens with space for a wedding. Bali is the kind of destination where any wedding style fits in, whether you’re into a glamorous, modern aesthetic or prefer something a little more earthy and tropical.

Bali’s pretty easy to get to from Australia, with direct flights running regularly from SYD, MEL, PER, BNE, and ADL. Most flights are between six to eight hours.

The best thing, though, is that Bali is easy for your guests to get to while still having that sense of being in another world entirely.

Where to go. There’s no bad choice when it comes to picking a destination wedding spot in Bali, but each area has its own vibe. Here are the main places to know.

  • Ubud. The cultural heart of Bali. Explore temples, rice terraces, and art galleries.
  • Seminyak. Enjoy upscale dining, shopping, and beach clubs.
  • Kuta. Known for its lively nightlife and surfing spots.
  • Canggu. Great for bars and nightlife, more affordable accommodation.
  • Uluwatu. Experience stunning clifftop views, the Uluwatu Temple, and surf beaches.
  • Nusa Dua. Beautiful beaches, luxury resorts, water sports central.
  • Lombok, Lembongan, Gili Islands. Bali’s neighbouring islands offer a less crowded experience with beautiful beaches, waterfalls, hikes, and snorkelling spots.

Explore the areas in more depth in our Local Bali Guide.

When to go. April to September is the dry season, which generally means lower humidity and sunny days. For smaller crowds and more affordable dates, look to April to June and September to October.

Discover more details in our Bali Seasonal Wedding Guide.

Getting married in Bali is doable, but most Aussie couples choose to do the legal work at home instead. Why? The process for getting married in Indonesia involves travelling with original documents, getting documents translated into Indonesian, and arriving at least ten days before your wedding.

It’s very common for couples having a destination wedding to have their legal ceremony at home. Whether they tell guests (or even family) they’ve done so is entirely at their discretion.

We walk you through all the details in our Guide to Getting Married in Indonesia.

In an ideal world, you’d have a window of 10-18 months to plan your wedding in Bali, but we’ve been known to get together an all-star team and wedding package in less time. If you’re on the typical track, though, here’s a simplified timeline for planning your destination wedding.

10-18 Months to go. Book your destination wedding package with your Easy Weddings specialist, including your venue, accommodation, celebrant, photographer, and entertainment. Shop for your wedding attire.

12 Months to go. Send your save-the-dates via mail or email, providing a notecard or wedding website with information on accommodation and travel arrangements. Choose and order your bridal attire (ordered gowns usually require about a year’s notice).

8-10 Months to go. Confirm your flights to Bali and arrange your honeymoon accommodation. Finalize all flowers for the ceremony and reception. Confirm your hair and makeup artist for the wedding day.

5-8 Months to go. Chat with your Easy Weddings consultant to answer all of your questions and assist you with planning all the finer details of your wedding. Order your wedding cake if it is different from the package. Finalize the decor and furniture for the event. Finalize the outfits for your wedding party.

2-3 Months to go. Arrange bomboniere or welcome bags with special Balinese goodies for your guests. Send out your wedding invitations.

2-4 Weeks to go. Easy Weddings sends your wedding day run sheet with timings and supplier contact info. Together, we’ll meet with your venue event manager to discuss the details of your wedding festivities.

Bali is a really fun place to make a suggested itinerary for your guests because there’s so much to do. Here are some of our favourite highlights:

  • Tour Temples. Bali is home to many temples. Don’t miss the iconic Uluwatu Temple perched on a cliff, Tanah Lot Temple set on the sea, and the majestic
Besakih Temple on the slopes of Mount Agung.
  • Chase Waterfalls. Discover Bali’s stunning waterfalls, including Tegenungan Waterfall, Gitgit Waterfall,
and Sekumpul Waterfall. These natural wonders offer refreshing dips in crystal-clear pools
    surrounded by lush greenery.
  • Beach Hop. Bali boasts an array of beautiful beaches, from the vibrant shores of Seminyak to the
surfer’s paradise in Canggu and the tranquil beaches of Nusa Dua.
  • Enjoy Cultural Experiences. Attend traditional dance
performances, visit local markets, and engage with the people to deepen your connection to Bali.

Can I commit to a date later?

Yep. We’re happy just to have an idea of when you’d like to host your wedding. It’s actually easier to find available dates if there’s a bit of flexibility.

What’s included in your Bali wedding packages?

In addition to personal wedding planning, our packages include a space for your ceremony and reception, your food and drink costs, and some accommodation. We’ll work with you to select which suppliers you’d like to include, and we’ll help you scope out a package that works for you.

Why should we book with Easy Weddings?

We’ve designed our destination wedding packages specifically for Australian couples just like you. Our team has a combined roster of 50+ years’ of experience in weddings and travel, and we’ve worked with thousands of 5-star wedding suppliers to bring couples’ wedding ideas to life. Is there a minimum or maximum guest count?

Our minimum guest count is 35 guests, but we don’t have a max. That said, your resort options may become more limited if you’re planning to host over 250 guests.

Will our Bali wedding be legally binding?

That’s up to you. Many couples opt to do the legal ceremony at home in Australia so they don’t have to stress about it during their wedding weekend, as getting married in Indonesia is quite a process.

Can Australians get married in Bali?

Yes, Australians can legally marry in Bali, but it requires careful planning and documentation. Requirements include a Certificate of No Impediment from the Australian embassy, filing a Notice of Intention to Marry in Indonesia, adhering to religious customs, and having two witnesses. You can read more about it in our Legal Wedding in Bali Guide, but we’re also happy to talk you through the options.

Which beach is best for a Bali wedding?

For couples seeking a breathtaking beach wedding with stunning sunset views, Seminyak or Canggu beaches in southern Bali offer picturesque settings. Explore our Bali destination wedding packages to discover exclusive beachfront venues and personalised services that ensure your special day is truly unforgettable.

What are the best months for a Bali wedding?

What are the wedding traditions in Bali?

A traditional Balinese wedding is rich in ritual, focusing on offerings made from natural materials like coconut leaves and flowers. It begins with a cleansing ceremony for the bride and groom. Unlike Western weddings, the exchange of vows is not part of the ceremony. Book a Bali destination wedding to experience firsthand the majesty of these unique traditions.

What do you wear to a wedding in Bali?

For weddings in Bali, attire should strike a balance between casual comfort and elegant style. Women may choose light, flowy dresses or chic jumpsuits that are perfect for Bali’s tropical weather. Men often favor linen shirts paired with tailored trousers or shorts, ensuring they stay cool while looking sharp. Consider comfortable footwear like loafers or dress shoes to complement your ensemble.
