The moment you decide to change into your second wedding outfit is entirely up to you, but it typically depends on a few factors. Are you planning to arrive at cocktail hour wearing a new look? If so, you’ll need your outfit change ready to go right after the ceremony exit and/or photo session. Alternatively, if you want to get a little more wear out of your main outfit, you could sneak off to change as cocktail hour winds down or switch looks after your reception entrance, first dance, and toasts are done and dusted.
“It’s important to decide whether you’re going to change as soon as you arrive at your reception and do your entrance, first dance, and cake cutting in the new dress or outfit, or if you’re going to continue to wear your classic gown during all the official moments of the reception then change into your new outfit when the party starts,” explains Mel Hassett of Mel Rose Couture Melbourne.
“If you plan to change immediately upon entering the reception, opt for something with a slimmer silhouette that still evokes a classic ball gown feel,” Mel says. “Kate Middleton’s reception dress is a wonderful example — a pared-back version of her ceremony gown, but still that classic silhouette with a strapless corset and elegant shrug. You could also go for a dress with a similar neckline and a figure-hugging skirt, all in a sparkly or beaded fabric.”
