Are you a fan of all things delightfully spooky? A little dark and edgy? Well, if you’re dreaming of a wedding rich in gothic flair, look no further. We have you covered, from black gowns to jewel-toned florals to decor that is downright vampiric. Read on for your dose of dark and moody wedding inspiration.

Dark and moody wedding dress inspiration

When you think of a wedding dress, shades of white, ivory, cream, and champagne often come to mind. However, if you’re envisioning something a bit witchier, a black wedding dress might be perfect for you. Gothic wedding dresses embrace darker tones like black, deep red, and rich purple, providing a dramatic and elegant alternative to traditional bridal wear. These dresses often feature luxurious fabrics such as velvet, satin, and lace, with intricate details like corset bodices, lace sleeves, and elaborate embroidery.

For gorgeous dark wedding flowers, opt for jewel tones. We adore emerald and ruby tones combined with lush greenery. Incorporate gothic elements into your table florals — think candelabras, ornate crucifixes, and even skulls! For your personal wedding flowers, finish your bouquet with a black silk ribbon for a romantic yet moody aesthetic.

Classic flowers like roses, orchids, and peonies in neutral colours can create a chic gothic look without cluttering or overwhelming the overall aesthetic.

The perfect venue will go a long way in establishing your gothic wedding aesthetic from the outset. Look for venues with an ornate charm or, better yet, an ecclesiastical vibe. We adore the sky high ceilings, exposed beams, and recycled brick at Higher Ground. Add darkly romantic flowers and pillar candles to complete the look.

The colour palette for a moody wedding typically includes deep shades like burgundy, black, and dark purple, accented with metallic tones such as gold and silver. Lighting plays a crucial role, with tall, black candelabras and candle-lit lanterns providing a warm, flickering glow. Tables are often draped in rich velvet or lace tablecloths, paired with dark, antique-style tableware. Floral arrangements might feature black calla lilies, deep red roses, and dark foliage, arranged in vintage silver vases. Details like wrought-iron gates, vintage keys, and old books can be incorporated into the decor, adding to the Gothic aesthetic without overwhelming the space.

Dark & moody wedding photography with Mark Morgan

Moody wedding photos have a unique allure, offering a dramatic and emotional touch to wedding albums. To achieve this style, several key components must come together. “Light, location, the couple, the wedding, time of day, poses, and the photographer are the key components to make for beautiful photos — but the most important component is the photographer. A good photographer can make moody photos in any location,” says Mark Morgan.

For couples interested in moody wedding photography, selecting the right photographer is crucial. “It’s a very specific taste, and if it’s what you want from your wedding, it’s important to pick the right photographer and to convey your requirements,” Morgan advises.

One way to ensure you have the right photographer is by reviewing their previous work. “You can tell you that you have the right photographer by first having a look at their previous work. Does it speak to you? Are the photos in their portfolio matching what you love? Is there a consistent set of images from different weddings in the photographer’s portfolio?” Morgan suggests. It’s important to note that not all weddings will be moody, as versatility is a valuable trait in photographers. “Don’t be worried if you see bright and airy photos also incorporated in their portfolio — they are just demonstrating their range. However, you should also see a good amount of the photo style you want in their portfolio. This is because if a photographer is shooting in the style they prefer, they will do a better job.”
