Some couples don’t see the need to find a song to cut their cake to, but having specific songs for each of your key events gives your reception some structure and gives your band or DJ something to work with.
Check the length of the song you use for your cake cutting ceremony; you might think it will only take a minute or two but by the time both of you have arrived at the cake and posed for photos you may need a four to five minute tune.
There are various types of song that are suitable for cutting your wedding cake, and these fall into four main categories.
Cake cutting songs about sugar or sweets
There are so many songs with sugar or sweet in the title or lyric that it might be difficult to decide which one to choose for your wedding. A few possibilities are ‘Sugar, sugar’ by the Archies, ‘The sweetest thing’ by U2, ‘How sweet it is’ by James Taylor, ‘Sweet love’ by Anita Baker, ‘Pour some sugar on me’ by Def Leppard, ‘The sweetest thing I’ve ever known’ by Lauryn Hill, ‘Sweets for my sweet’, by Ben E King, or ‘Memories are made of this’ by Dean Martin.
Cake cutting songs about cutting
A song about cutting might not sound like a very romantic choice for the cake ceremony, but there are a few that can be quite effective. Some examples include ‘Cut the cake’ by Average White Band, and ‘Cuts like a knife’ by Bryan Adams. You could always choose ‘The first cut is the deepest’ by Cat Stevens, but do be aware that it’s about looking for love again after a failed relationship which might not be so appropriate for a wedding reception!
Love songs that were on your first dance shortlist
When you are choosing wedding music there will always be songs that you love but that don’t quite make it as your choice for the first dance. The cake cutting is the perfect time to play these songs so you still get to hear them.
Popular love songs to cut your cake to include ‘The way I am’ by Ingrid Michaelson, ‘Everlasting love’ or ‘Our love is here to stay’ by Natalie Cole, ‘Love is all around’ by The Troggs, or ‘So happy together’ by The Turtles.
Upbeat cake cutting songs
The cake ceremony is one of the less formal parts of the wedding reception, so it’s great to choose a fun, upbeat song to accompany it. Cheerful tunes to cut your cake to could include ‘That’s amore’ by Dean Martin, ‘When I’m sixty-four’ by The Beatles, ‘Hey mambo, mambo Italiano’ by Rosemary Clooney, ‘What a wonderful world’ by Louis Armstrong, ‘A wink and a smile’ by Harry Connick Jr, or ‘Only wanna be with you’ by Hootie & the Blowfish.
