Are destination weddings cheaper?
When it comes to destination weddings, cost can be a major factor. While it’s true that destination weddings can be more affordable than traditional weddings, it ultimately depends on several factors such as:
- The location. There’s no getting around it — some places are simply more expensive than others. Different countries or regions may have varying costs of living, currency exchange rates, and local wedding industry prices. Popular wedding destinations often have higher demand and may come with a higher price tag.
- Your guest list. A larger guest list can mean more of the budget needs to go towards food and beverage, and potentially higher venue costs. You might also feel like you need to host more than just the wedding day since so many guests have traveled from afar.
- Venue Selection. Many couples opt to get married at a hotel or resort based on their all-inclusive packages. They can include various services such as catering, photography, decor, and coordination. These packages can simplify the planning process and potentially offer cost savings compared to sourcing each service individually.
- Travel and Accommodation. Consider the cost of flights, accommodation for yourselves and your guests (if you’re covering any), transportation to and from the venue, and any necessary visas or travel documents. Depending on the destination, these costs can vary significantly.
- Currency Exchange Rates. If you’re planning a destination wedding in a foreign country, keep an eye on currency exchange rates. Fluctuations in exchange rates can impact your budget, especially if you’re paying for services in the other currency.
Are most destination wedding venues all-inclusive?
Many destination wedding venues are indeed all-inclusive, providing a convenient and hassle-free experience for couples and their guests. All-inclusive venues often offer packages that encompass not only the ceremony and reception spaces but also catering, accommodation, and even additional perks such as spa treatments and recreational activities. These comprehensive packages allow couples to have a stress-free wedding planning experience while staying within their budget.
What should guests pay for at a destination wedding?
When it comes to destination weddings, guests are generally responsible for their travel expenses, including flights and accommodation. It’s important to provide your guests with clear information about the estimated costs and options for accommodations, ensuring they can make informed decisions ahead of the RSVP date.
Some couples opt to pay the costs for specific VIP guests like their wedding party, though that isn’t the guests’ expectation. Some couples will also organise with the hotel to cover a certain percentage of the room rates for their guests, unbeknownst to them.
What should the couple pay for at a destination wedding?
As the couple, you’ll typically be responsible for the usual wedding expenses as you would for a local wedding. With a destination wedding, you will have to factor your own travel and accommodation costs in, and there may be a fee for obtaining the necessary marriage license and fulfilling any legal requirements associated with getting married in the destination country.
If you’re feeling generous and have a little wiggle room in the budget to splash on your guests, perhaps you could treat them to a morning-after breakfast at a nice local restaurant, or send them on a guided tour or fun activity so that they have even more amazing memories from your wedding to take home.
Any additional events, like a welcome party or rehearsal dinner, are of course up to you to host if you choose to include them on the agenda.
Is there a way to get cheaper flights for a destination wedding?
Absolutely! Here are a few tips to help you secure more affordable flights for your destination wedding:
- Book in advance. The earlier you book your flights, the better chance you have of finding discounted fares.
- Choose a smart wedding date. Consider off-peak wedding dates or arriving and departing midweek when airfares tend to be lower.
- Compare prices. Use flight comparison websites to find the best deals and take advantage of special promotions or discounts.
- Keep an eye on airlines’ newsletters and social media. Airlines often release exclusive deals and limited-time offers to their subscribers or followers. If you spot something amazing, don’t forget to pass it along to your friends and family.
- Consider group booking. If you’re able to book 10+ flights at a time, airlines like Jetstar and Virgin Australia will give you a discount code. It requires more logistical planning on your end, but can save money for you and your guests.
How do you create and stick to a wedding budget if the exchange rate fluctuates?
Managing a wedding budget when the exchange rate fluctuates can be challenging. Amelia recommends following these strategies:
- Set a budget in your home currency. Determine a budget in your local currency, and track expenses accordingly.
- Monitor exchange rates. Keep an eye on the exchange rates leading up to your wedding and aim to send deposits when rates are most favourable, even if that means depositing early.
- Allow a buffer. When setting your budget, include a contingency amount to cushion you if the rates change.
- Work with an agent. Seek the assistance of a destination wedding specialist (that’s us!) who can provide guidance and support in navigating your budget should things need to shift around. Our wedding packages allow you to make all payments in AUD.
Planning a destination wedding doesn’t have to be a daunting task, especially when it comes to budgeting. Using this guidance, we hope you feel a little more confident that your dream wedding can become a reality while staying within your financial means.
