It is best to provide the DJ with a playlist of songs for the various aspects of a wedding ceremony and reception just in case they play a song you really don't like, but a wedding song list can also be played from if you are happy for the DJ to do that. Suggested song lists are available at http://www.mobilemcwillo.com.au/song-lists.html
If you pick the right DJ they will know how to rock a mixed age crowd but any wedding DJ with a 'usual song list' would be dated in a few months! There's an art to knowing the people you have infront of you as a DJ and the time of day or mood thats requred for a particular moment. Thats what makes it fun and dynamic.
I like to get a few song requests from the bride and groom before the wedding. I ask for 5 you'd love to hear and 5 you'd hate to hear. From those few songs I can tell what other types of music you would like.
One of my favourite parts of the process is hearing the stories behind why the songs are so special to the couple, often the couple learn things about each other they didnt know. Its a really magical process and it makes playing for them so personalised and meaningful.
So in short, give a few examples of artists or songs but dont be too prescriptive or you'll lose the point of tusting a professional to manage the flow.
It's always appreciated when you provide your DJ with a small playlist for both the Dinner and Dancing sections of your wedding. This helps them get a clearer idea of exactly what you are after and then they can expand on your choices based on the dance floor response and requests from your guests.

We can provide you with a list of the songs we are playing so that the DJ can organise his set with out any double ups. Our song list is on our website and as a Bride you can choose which songs you would like us to play throughout the night also.
Thanks,

Hi there,
Any good supplier will ask you about what you would like to hear on your special day. It is important to consider whether the couple getting married has any favourite songs and the DJs job is to be able to use these to guide the rest of the set.
Wedding Djs all work differently, however should be considering your needs and always have some fail proof back up songs!
Furthermore, good DJs will only ever play high quality mp3s which are bought in not taken from bad sources!
Best of luck!

No need to supply a DJ playlist, I will guage the age of the guests and play age appropriate songs while ensuring I cover all genres periodically. But requested songs will be sourced and played.
We are a live band as opposed to a DJ, so we look after both the live music, and the “DJ” playlist music between the live sets.
For the live music, we have our full repertoire available on our web site, so we invite the bride and groom to be to select any preferences they may from here, as well as perhaps anything they do not want to hear. Often, there may be just a few selections from here, and sometimes they just want to leave it all to us. For those songs that we select, we have good list of songs that are spread across the wide variety of styles and ages typical at a wedding, so we will use these and, also read the audience and perhaps adjust on the fly.
For the music between the live sets, we also have complete typical playlists, but again invite the newlyweds to be to also have whatever input they want here, anything from a few songs to include, to a complete list of songs, or again sometimes they would just like us to choose and adjust during the night as need be. This gives an opportunity to include any songs that are not covered in our live performance.
For both the live and playlist “DJ” music, you will typically have a list of more listening music for the earlier part of the night, and then a more up-tempo list for the dancing the will typically follow then bridal waltz.
Hope this helps.
I get asked this question a lot. A great DJ will be spontaneous and should never rely on a playlist. Every wedding is different, the surrounds, guests, age group and requests. I will always start my music as a blank canvass and get a feel of the crowd.
You don't want to become predictable. I tell all my clients to keep their list to about 20 songs.
DJ's get paid good money to have the dancefloor full. Why should you spend too much time working out a complex playlist.

Looking at this from the perspective of a cover band, we generally recommend that clients to look through our songlist and pick out perhaps 5-10 songs that they know both them and their friends and family would love to hear.
Afterwards, we ask if there is a certain genre of music that they want the set list for the night to be based on.
Finally, we ask if there are any songs in our full songlist that they definitely DO NOT want to hear.
Most good DJ's and bands will have experience at choosing a great selection of songs for the reception if they are provided with this information. While planning out and providing a full playlist for the DJ may seem to be a good idea, it generally makes things more difficult, as the most entertaining and memorable performances come from when a DJ reads their audience and plays songs based on what they are enjoying in the moment.
Hope this helps!
