I want to propose to my girlfriend with an actual engagement ring (not a proposal ring.) What's the best way to go about this? I've got a fair idea of design, but not sure how about size. I want it to be a surprise. Any advice welcome.

Hello ??
The best way to the get the perfect engagement ring for your partner is to have a consultation with a reputable jeweller - hopefully an independent and local jeweller. You'll find you get honest advice and are able to work with them on creating the perfect design piece. Don't fall into the trap of thinking you "can do better" online - it just won't happen. You won't get service after the sale, care plans or on-going support. Local, independent jewellers will always strive to give you the best deal and the best options for your budget.
In terms of finger size - this is always a problem with a surprise. If she wears jewellery it's a good idea to sneak out with one of her rings - noting which finger she wears it on and this can give you jeweller an indication of size. If she wears a ring on either ring finger but you can't get away with taking it for a few hours, pop it on one of your fingers and mark a dot (with a sharpy!) wear it sits and this can be used as an indication.
Hope this helps!! ??
