No you most certainly do not! "Just buying a ring and hoping for the best" can be a very expensive mistake. If the ring is too large (4 sizes or above) it will be almost impossible to resize. The options will be either a reshank (new band) or a compeltely new make. The same answer for a ring that is too small unfortunately. An incorrect size is made even more difficult if you have diamond set shoulders.
Perhaps encourage a trip out with her girlfriends and give one of them the heads up that you like them to take her to a local jeweller and look at rings. They can encourage her to have her finger sized in store.
Some businesses, like ours (Argyle Jewellers) offer a digital ring sizing sheet which is very simple to use and can at least get you very very close to the correct size. You can also "borrow" one of her rings when she's not wearing it and either put it on one of your fingers and take a photo to indicate where the ring sits on your finger then show your jeweller. I know you say your girlfriend doesn't wear a ring so these options may not be best for you.
Best advice I can give you is to always buy from a reputable jeweller - a bricks and mortar store. Buying online can be a costly exercise and you never receive the backup support you do from a local business. You may think you're saving yourself a few dollars but in the long run you build a relationship with the business that are creating/selling you something pretty special.

At Larsen we see clients regularly that we are very good in guessing finger size. I would recoomend that you showcase us photos of your girlfriend and we will be able to guess her finger size so the ring fits on the day of the prposal. Afterwards if the ring needs adjusting, we offer a free complimentary resize that is valid for 60 days after collection. Please let us know if you want to visit our studio for an appointment to discuss your options.
If you’ve talked about marriage before, you could always go ring shopping together to get the right size and style.
If you want to keep it a surprise, here are a few tricks:
1. Check her other rings – Sneak one she wears on her ring finger (left or right hand) and take it to a jeweller to check the size.
2. Use a ring sizer – You can grab a ring measuring tool off Amazon or print a size chart online.
3. Ask a friend or family member – They might already know her size or can casually bring it up. Something like "I'm in to gold right now and want to buy a ring online but I don't know my size". This can kick off the conversation for the friend to take your girlfriend shopping and both get fitted.
4. Play it safe – If you’re not sure, go a bit bigger. It’s usually easier to resize a ring down than up.
A jeweller can also help estimate based on her height, hand shape, and general size trends.
