What is the best kind of lipstick to wear on your wedding day?

I'm not sure what kind of lipstick to wear, matte? Or liner all over? Or a specific brand that stays on?

For your wedding day I often recommend a subtle gloss or nude hydrating lipstick to create plumped lucious lips - this is easily done without a lip liner and can be reapplied very easily. Some brides however prefer a bold lip which i would suggest to be a matte long lasting lipstick. This look is stunning with classic minimal makeup or winged liner but its not for everyone. Either way, I always suggest getting your own lipstick to touch up during the day to make sure you always look your best. In preparation for the wedding day try to use a lip exfoliant and/or a lip mask to ensure your lips are smooth and hydrated. I provide my brides with lip sheet masks to use for a couple weeks before and on the wedding day to create that perfect bridal lip.

Hi if you want a vintage red lip best for a matt finish. Other wise use a gloss finish that gives a nice glow. Lip liner stops bleeding .

Hi Kelly, lipstick is a personal preference. There are so many on the market today. I always ask my client what they prefer and take it from there. I like to line the lips fully with a lip pencil and then use whichever lipstick the bride likes. The lip liner will help the lipstick to last longer. It always best to have a touch up lipstick with you all day to reapply.

Hi Kelly. In my opinion, Lipstick on your big day is just as important as the shoes you will be wearing. Both need to be comfortable because you are wearing them all day. I often suggest to my brides to stick with a brand they know and love and make sure you have it to top up with. A wedding day isn't really the time you want to be adventurous with that 24 hour hold lipstick you saw on offer in priceline, only to find it completely dries your lips out and it is all you can think about. Applying a balm, then lip liner in a shade matching the lipstick of your choice, and then the lipstick itself should allow for maximum staying power. As for Matte colours over glosses or sheens, I would make sure you try a few before settling on one. Matte can look flat and take away from a dewy look, but can look amazing on a classic minimal look that draws attention more to the lips. If there is a matte colour you like, but want the option of changing it for the reception, you can always apply a touch of gloss or balm and this will add a sheen to the colour.

Hello Kelly,

Lipstick is very personal. I try to avoid using matte lipsticks as they often look very dry, and flat causing your lips to look smaller instead luscious and full! I like top apply a lip balm first to the lips to add hydration, then a primer to the lips to help hold the colour, lip pencil and then the gloss, or lipstick as per your preference. I always buy a lipstick or gloss for my brides to top up I highly recommend you do this, as this way you do not have to worry when it comes off which it will unless you are good at air kissing :) Make sure your lips are in great health by exfoliating them and applying lip balm regularly as this way lipstick will last alot longer and look alot better, as nothing can cover dry chapped lips! :)

Hi Kelly, I am going to throw a bit of a curve ball. When you decide on the finish you want (Matte, satin, gloss) I always suggest my brides start firstly with a lip tint, then a liner, then your lipstick or lip gloss of choice. This is purely so that when that lip colour does rub off and before you have a chance to reapply, the lip tint will still ensure you have a beautiful colour to your lips. Some brides opt for a lip tint to add colour, and then just add gloss throughout the day. Definitely something I recommend.

Hi Kelly

Lipstick is a personal preference but all lipsticks need touching up at some stage. I always give my brides and the bridesmaids touch up kits.

My brides like to often have lipstick with gloss or lacquer over the top. Again it is personal preference to what you feel most comfortable with. Matte colour alone wont stand out in photos so a gloss or wetter look is always better. Colours are also up to the individual and the look you are after but most stay in the neutral tones that are not too dark or bright as that is all that you will see on the photos.

Thank you for your enquiry. Whether you use lip pencil or lipstick in MATT or VELVET or any other finish really depends on your personal preference and the look you and your makeup artist creates for your to represent you the best. I personally love using lip pencils but I always suggest to use long lasting products. The last think you want to worry about or will have time for on your big day is whether your lipstick stained your new husband's lips or whether you are still wearing any. Here are some well tried products for you:

MAC Cosmetics
RETRO MATTE LIQUIED LIPCOLOUR;
PRO LONGWEAR LIPCOLOUR

Stilla
STAY ALL DAY LUQUID LIPSTICK

Smashbox
ALWASY ON LIQUID LIPSTICK

Hi Kelly, from our extensive experience we would recommend using a combination of liner, lipstick and lipgloss (unless you want a completely matte finish, in which case you can skip the gloss). Each of these products has a different function - the liner will prevent the lip-colour from bleeding into any fine lines around the lips; lipstick provides the intensity of the colour that you want (which can be sheer or rich), and lipgloss provides beautiful dimensions to the lips which we found particularly nice in photography because of the way that it reflects light.

You generally only need to re-apply lipstick and lipgloss during the day. There are techniques that a professional makeup artist can do to make the lipstick stays longer so you do not have to re-apply too often.

Hi Kelly, the best lipstick I recommend is a colour lip gloss. (This is for yourself to do during the day.) It is easy to reapply, its smells nice and you don't need a mirror. It also help moisturise your lips. Sometimes when brides are nervous, they tend to have drier lips and they aren't drinking enough water throughout the day. That's why I also recommend a nice colour lipgloss, something from Mac or Stella.
