I've seen wedding photos where the bride's makeup ends up looking terrible by the night time. how do I avoid this? I'm hoping to have a photoshoot during the night so I don't want my makeup to look awful... should I get my makeup artist to come back at night, or should I do my own touch ups?

Hi Roxanne,
Best thing to keep your makeup at its best is finding the makeup artist with the right products.
Some may not have pro long wear makeup there for it can wear off quicker.
Also a good setting spray can go along way :)
Hops this helps.

Paying for a quality Makeup Artist that has and knows how to use professional quality products to make you look amazing all day long.
For best results 6 months before hand see a professional beautician trained in skin analysis, and makeup for best results. Have treatments done 6 months before wedding as this will benefit you in the long term as well. Use 50 plus sun screen in the sun at all times stops aging process as well. Using a professional foundation that suits your skin type with a quality powder will also benefit your skin and long wear of makeup. You will always have to reapply lip stick, so you need to buy one after your makeup trail. A makeup trail is always a good idea to see how you like it. Plus to see how you feel with fake eyelashes as these really make the eyes pop for photos. So this would be my tips. Do this and you can not go wrong.
I think everyone has covered the main tips about getting your makeup to last all day:
- make sure your skin is healthy
- use products that are designed for your skin-type
- prepare your face with a primer & use a setting product. You can buy setting spray that will make you makeup waterproof. I use stageline
Some other key tips I give my brides are:
- hold ear-buds behind your bouquet & use them to catch tears before they fall down your face
- don't wipe your face because even the most resistant makeup will rub off if you're rough with it
- if you need to blow your nose (I highly recommend you take an antihistamine or cold & flu tablet if you have a runny nose), but tap & wipe, don't rub
Having a makeup artist come back for touch ups will depend on how confident you are with your makeup. Many makeup artists give lessons.
All the best for your wedding day xo
Hi Roxanne,
To ensure your makeup looks great all day there are a few tricks. Your artist should prep your skin according to your skin-tone at the start of the day. If you're oily then a mattifying primer should be used, as well as a setting powder and mattifying spray if needed. If you're more of a dry skintype, then it's best to use a primer and foundation that won't be absorbed into your skin and feel uncomfortable. You can use blotting papers and your chosen lipstick for touch ups during the day and into night. Some artist (myself included) provide a touch-up service for their brides so you can look your best before your photoshoot and/or reception.
Hi Roxanne
That is a very good question. Always ask this question at your trial too.
It is important you find a makeup artist that uses good products. I use Napoleon at Niche. There are products that help prepare the skin and finish the makeup to help it last. I have brides and bridesmaid who say that their makeup lasted all night. However with eating and drinking at reception, lipstick does not last as well as the rest of the makeup. all you will need to do is touch up your lipstick for night photos.
Hope this helps

Hi Roxanne,
A professional makeup artist will design your makeup to ensure you look good up close but also photograph beautifully as well; it should last all day and into the night without the need for major touch-ups except lipstick and perhaps a light blotting powder if necessary. Your wedding day makeup should be comfortable to wear, withstand the temperatures of the day as well as the inevitable tears. Professional makeup artists will assess your skin and apply primers or mattifiers (depending on your skin type and the time of year) to give the foundation a great base to cling to. Personally I prefer a liquid matte foundation (that I airbrush on) and then set the foundation with a setting powder. I like to start the makeup more on the matte side as it will develop when your natural oils come through to a semi matte, semi dewy finish. This is where your makeup should remain for the rest of the day. The actual design of your makeup should only have shimmer or highlighters added where we want the shine (ie. a touch on the cheekbones, brow bones, and perhaps a shimmer on the eyelid and maybe a touch in the lipstick or lip gloss) with the rest remaining matte. Too much shine on the face means added editing work for the photographer afterwards which they don't like. Mascara and eyeliner must be waterproof - this is a given! With the right makeup artist you shouldn't have to get them to return at night to re-do your makeup, they should be designing your makeup to last the distance. Makeup for a wedding day has a lot of demands placed on it. It is one thing to do makeup to look great for a photo shoot or YouTube clip, it is another to make it last the distance and photograph well right till the end. This is what you are paying for with a professional makeup artist - someone who understands all this. I hope this helps Roxanne. All the best with your wedding planning. Lisa Thomas - Makeup 4 Brides
Hi Roxanne, having your makeup done professionally is the best way to ensure a makeup look that will last the day. Depending on your skin type your makeup may need some touch ups at the end of the day. I'm my experience the only touch ups required were lipstick and blotting powder on the ares that had gone shiny. If you are unsure or would prefer to leave it to your makeup artist, certainly book for the reception also. As a guide you may wish to book in a makeup trial and see whether your makeup will need reapplying by the evening. All the best!

The best way to make sure your makeup looks good all day is to make sure firstly that your skin is in the best shape possible. Using the correct skincare before and on the wedding day will ensure that your skin is not too dry or too oily. When your skin is too dry, it will absorb the makeup, as it is looking for some form of hydration. If your skin is too oily, your makeup will slide off.
Application is important too. Using the correct primer, a good foundation and finishing the makeup off with a foundation powder instead of a standard powder will ensure the makeup lasts.
My brides always say that my makeup lasts till midnight - and I think it is because of the above and the fact that I apply foundation and powder over the eyes as well - the old fashioned way which ensures the eye makeup lasts.
I recommend that you have your makeup artist supply you with a lipstick (which you would pay for) that matches the one applied for your top ups. It will not be hot when you get married in August so you will not have to worry about ending up with a shiny face as it will still be cold :) Ask her also to supply you with a powder foundation just in case :)
Hope this helps!
Kindest
Yvette

Hi Roxanne, I agree with the other comments, you can certainly ensure you ask your makeup to use products that last all day. However, I've also done makeup for weddings where the bride wanted me to come back in the evening and touch up the look or with some weddings, there is a dress change and they wanted the look to be slightly adjusted.
Depending on which makeup artist you go with, ask if this is an option and if they can create a package which includes this? If they are local it might not cost much more. :)
