To ensure your guests understand the dress code for your formal/black-tie wedding, make it clear and consistent across all communication. Here are a few tips:

  • Include It on Your Invitations: Use wording like “Black Tie Attire” or “Formal Attire” on your invitations.
  • Add a Note on Your Wedding Website: Provide examples or inspiration to help guests interpret the dress code, such as tuxedos, floor-length gowns, or formal cocktail dresses.
  • Share Friendly Reminders: If you’re using social media or sending reminders, casually mention the dress code as part of the wedding details.
  • Enlist Your Bridal Party: They can help spread the word and provide clarification if guests have questions.

The more specific and consistent you are, the easier it will be for your guests to show up dressed appropriately!

Hello, Make sure you put the dress code on the invitation, guest will look for it on there. Use wording like Black Tie or Formal or Casual depending on what kind of wedding you will be having. Guests will tend to look up what this means on google or ask a friend if they are unsure of the term.

Firstly ensure that your invittions stat Black Tie as a dress code, gernerally people will respect that once stated.  If you are having other instructions with your invitations, ie: directions to the venue or the receptions, information about travel or accommodation, then you could also have a 'what is acceptable for dress code ie: Men, black tie formal, or jacket & tie at minimum, no jeans. Ladies restaurant length or long dress preferred'

Another good way of getting the word around is to make sure family understand what is required, and then they can spread the word.

No doubt there will always be a couple who will not put in the effort, but do not let them bother you.  Most, if not all of your guests will aim to make you happy with your wedding style.

Hi

I would suggest you have a wedding website and under Dress Code, place a little write up with an appropriate photo. A great app is "JOY" to build your site if you haven't already. I think they're amazing as you can share so much with your guests, even last minute updates leading up to your BIG day!

Hope this helps?

Fondly
