My partner and I live in Australia but I originate from NZ. I want my pastor to officiate our wedding and wanted to know if we can get married over here in Australia if he is our celebrant?

An Authorised Marriage Celebrant is only able to conduct weddings in Australia and its territories. Your NZ pastor may be able to take part in the ceremony but an Authorised Marriage Celebrant must conduct the legal parts of the ceremony and be considered as the leading celebrant.

No, only australian marriage celebrants. But talk to your celebrant about having the NZ pastor pray at certain points in the ceremony.
They can take a small or a large part , I have done this several times.
No sorry but as suggested below they can be part of the ceremony.
Hello bride to be!
Legally you would need an Australian civil celebrant or religious celebrant to solemnise your marriage in Australia. However you certainly could have your NZ pastor co-celebrate with your Sydney celebrant. Hope that helps with your planning :) Big love, Michelle xx

If you are registered in Australia... Civil Celebrant, you can only marry people in Australia, I know that a pastor ordained by the Universal Church can perform marriages globally, depends on the specific laws and regulation of each country and region as some jurisdictions may or may not recognize ULC ordinations for civic purposes like marriage.
Hi there
A NZ celebrant may not marry you in Australia as all celebrants must be registered by the Attorney General's Dept to perform a legal ceremony.
As a suggestion, your NZ celebrant can certainly be part of the ceremony but you would need to have a registered celebrant conduct the legal sections of the ceremony to ensure legality of your marriage.
I've done this a number of times, particularly with Samoan and Indian ceremonies.
It really ticks all the boxes.
Hope your day is amazing!

Hi "Anon",
The short answer to your question is No, a wedding in Australia must be officiated over by an authorised Australian celebrant (or clergy member). And likewise, Australian celebrants are not able to conduct legal wedding ceremonies outside of Australia. This is because each country has very different requirements around marriage and the process of becoming a registered celebrant.
However, you could have a registered Australian celebrant work together with your pastor. In such instances, the Australian celebrant would take care of all of the legal requirements, including the paperwork, and your pastor could speak more personally about you and your partner.
Hope this helps. Happy Wedding Planning!

The celebrant must be authorised to legally perform marriages in Australia under Attorney Generals Department Guidelines.
To legally marry someone in Australia, a celebrant needs to be registered with the Australian government. A New Zealand celebrant does not meet this requirement and therefore cannot legally perform a marriage ceremony in Australia.
You could however, have your pastor deliver a ceremony without any legal aspects, and have an Authorised Australian Celebrant there on the day to complete the required Australian Legal requirements.
