About

I have been married for many years but I remember my wedding like it was yesterday. My hope for the day was that not only did my husband and I have the best time ever but also so did our guests. We spent ages getting our vows to each other right and to this day, I'm so glad we did. I remember the room fell silent as those special words were read to each other - it was simply magical. I was born in NZ and lived most of my adult life in the UK, before moving to Aus with my family 10 years ago.

FAQ

Unlike the movies, marriage ceremonies cannot be a surprise to the other party to the marriage. This is based on one of the key premises of what makes a marriage legal and that is one of consent. It is deemed that a surprise in effect could be seen as one person not being given the required time to knowingly and willingly enter into the legal bonds of marriage.

HOWEVER, you can do a surprise ceremony for your guests as all the paperwork would have been completed beforehand and both parties would have confirmed no legal impediment to the marriage.

I have been part of a wedding where the couple had invited all their friends and family to what the guests believed was a 40th birthday party but was actually a wedding. The witnesses were also in on the secret too but that was easier as it was the mum of each of the marrying couple.

There are requirements for a wedding to be legal. One of which is the registration or notice of the intended marriage and the completion of the paperwork and the verification of the ID of the marrying couple. The lodgement of the intended date of wedding has to fall between 1 calendar month and 18 months after the date of notification.

So in short, no you can't get married any quicker than 1 calendar month after you pop the question.

UNLESS, there is a significant reason such as a medical emergency. In which case I can work with you to apply for something called a Legal Shortening. The application is submitted and the registrar has the final say over whether it is an acceptable reason. Under no circumstances should concrete plans be made until the legal shortening has been approved. Reasons such as a holiday, someone's birthday or a work event, won't cut it.

All celebrants have to complete registered training and also be licensed with the Attorney General's office. You can check these two details by simply asking to see the Training qualification and also visit the Attorney General's website and check the celebrant is indeed registered.

But after that part is done, how DO you choose?

Well it really is down to you and you feel that celebrant represents you and your wishes best. After all they will be on this journey with you and also help you be centre stage at this wonderful time of your life.

Sometimes its as simple as whether you felel you "gel" with them. You sometimes just get a feeling.

Or it could be that they remind you of someone or a place that has fond memories.

I have a UK accent and sometimes couple choose me because of it.

And sometimes don't choose me for the same reason.

Most celebrants offer a free no-obligation coffee and chat close to their homes or nowadays over Zoom or Skype or over the telephone.

Some couples also like to get a set of simple questions together to get the celebrant accross what they are after and then see if their values and approach to the ceremony align.

It is SOOOOOO important for both parties to feel they can bring out the best of the cermeony in way that fits.

So don't be afraid to say NO if something doesn't feel right.

July 2024

From the moment we started speking with Nicky in person we new that she would be the one to assist in helping our wedding be perfect. The several video meetings, in pesrson meets, filing of paper work was all smooth and hassle free. The vows Nicky read on the day were perfect, and helped us work out our walk down the aisle struture. And after Nicky was a big help being guiding guests to and from, or helping the 2 of us talk a quick break between different parts of the wedding. You will not be disspointed with Nicky, she has a lovely warm, relaxed style that was perfect for us.

June 2024

Nicky was the most lovely, pleasant and helpful person we could have asked for. She was so patient with us (as we were fairly unorganized) and always guided us in the right direction. She made the whole thing as focused on us as possible, not only willing to change any of the parts but giving us realistic feedback on ideas that we had and the potential issues with some ideas from her experience. I can't recommend her enough and I'm so glad she was a part of our day.

October 2023

I recently had the pleasure of engaging with Nicky as our celebrant for our beautiful wedding on a boat on the 21st of October. I cannot express how exceptional her service was. Nicky went above and beyond to make our special day perfect. Her professionalism and dedication shone through as she expertly navigated the unique challenges of a boat wedding. Nicky conducted a beautiful and heartfelt ceremony that left a lasting impression on us and our guests. If you're looking for a celebrant who will make your wedding day truly memorable, I wholeheartedly recommend Nicky. She is a true expert in her field, and we are grateful for the magic she added to our special day. Thank you, Nicky, for making our wedding a day we will always cherish. Love Nic and Dan.

Non-religious Celebrant in a Chapel

Hi, My Fiancé and I have booked in through the Cooma Parish to use the Thredbo Chapel for our big day (and paid in advance). If we have declined using the catholic priest can we use a non-denominational Civil celebrant, or are we required to use a religious celebrant?

Lifetimes Celebrant

One of the ski resort local sites states that the chapel is actually a non-denominational Christian church and the respondent got married there with a Navy Chaplain not a catholic priest. Somone else has commented on the thread that many couples use non-religious celebrants for services there. I'm guessing a call or email to Father Peter (I think that is who is currnetly in residence) should satisfy any concerns but it seems like its all fine.

Celebrant for a small, intimate, midweek wedding

Hi, We are from NSW and coming on a camping trip up to 1770 in the week beginning the 14th of August. Our close friends and family are coming along too. Looking for a fun enthusiast celebrant. And recommendations of a photographer — for the ceremony and maybe 30 mins after. Vibes: low key, barefoot and not formal. Not sure where to start

Lifetimes Celebrant

Wow, that sounds amazing, what a wonderful idea (and I love the idea of no heels - yippeeee)

I'd love to be on your considered list.

I'm from NZ orignally but spent most of my life in the UK so my accent is quite Kentish/ London - so can bring something a little bit out of the ordinary to your ceremony without all those starchy vibes.

I'm also available during that week.

You say "not sure where to start" , well that's where I can help.

The next step is for us to chat and see if you think I'm a good fit for you.

And then - the rest is down to me for the ceremony.

I do all the legals and paperwork and am there to chat to on the run up with any questions or ideas.

You can be assured I have plenty of experience BUT each and every ceremony is so unique and I love that part of it.

You can then literally just focus on you and your family and friends.

You will have my personal mobile and I'm available to you anytime.

So, if you are ready to chat just get in touch.
