"We had a brilliant ceremony with Jeff. His charisma throughout the ceremony made it an enjoyable, calm, and happy time. Jeff met with us on a number of occasions and had all forms printed and organised. Jeff made our ceremony suit us by having conversions and getting stories. He hit our brief 100%. We couldn't have been happier. Thank you, Jeff." — Leila S.

About
Jeff has worked in a wide range of roles involving public speaking and writing for his whole life including live theatre, television and teaching. This naturally led to him saying "I will" when asked by some good friends if he would train to be a celebrant to marry them many years ago. He hasn't looked back. He loves working with couples to find the right ways to let them say "I love you" to each other with their friends and family celebrating every moment with them.

If you don't want the crowds, the frills and the expense but you certainly want to get married then consider this package. This is a "legals only" wedding with the two of you, two witnesses and myself. You don't need to say anything fancy but you can if the moment takes you. We run though all the legal aspects of getting married, have a basic ceremony at your place or somewhere special and sign the paper work. Can be over in less than 10 minutes if that's how you want it. From $400.
Most weddings fit into this category: find a special place, invite your nearest and dearest, put on your finest clothes and celebrate your love with all who are special to you. We will meet and cover both the legal and ceremonial aspects of getting married. Over the preparation time, we look at making your vows just right and plan other parts of the ceremony to reflect both of you as a couple. This includes all preparation, legals, recorded music, PA, signing table and writing. From $750
If you want to do something amazing: a hike through the wilderness to your secret location, a trip on a boat to your best fishing spot, a mile above the location you met or anything else your imagination can dream up then I'm up for it. This package includes all that you need for a great ceremony and the legals but also will take into account your wild ideas. Sound me out and we'll see where we can go...

FAQ
The NOIM (Notice of Intention to Marry) is completed and submitted between 18 months and 1 month before the wedding. It needs to have a record of identity documents (birth certificate/passport/official photo ID) and any record of change of names or previous marriages.
Prior to the wedding a document called the No Legal Impediment certificate must be signed by both parties. It declares that there is no known legal reason why the marriage cannot take place.
On the day of the wedding two copies of the marriage certificate and a ceremonial certificate are signed by the couple and two witnesses as well as being witnessed by the celebrant.
All forms and certificates are provided by the celebrant and the process will be explained when we first meet. It's not as daunting as it sounds!
Yes, I have a PA which can play music for your ceremony as well as make use of three microphones. The PA can be used by videographers to take a direct feed from the ceremony microphones. Music can be played from a phone or other bluetooth device for the ceremony. I am happy to look after that aspect of the wedding.
I am happy to travel anywhere in Australia for your wedding. Travel costs will be factored into my initial quotation. While most of my weddings are in Melbourne or Gippsland, I have celebrated marriages in northern Victoria and Tasmania. I have also married couples in Victoria who live interstate. It is easy to arrange Zoom meetings and the legal work can be easily done from a distance. Don't worry about where your wedding is going to be based - I love travelling and exploring new venues.
Yes, I am happy to work with you for any occasion. Naming ceremonies, Christenings, MCing at a special birthday and funerals are just some of the services I have provided for familes over the years.
While there are legal parts of the marriage ceremony which must be performed by the Marriage Celebrant, most other things can be done by anyone. Couples often want family members or friends to play a special part in the ceremony and I am happy to work with you all to make sure that the right people are there for you to make your wedding just as you want it. Discuss it during our meetings and we can organise pretty much anything!
I provide all legal paper work, a PA and microphones, recorded music and a signing table. Not all those are needed for all weddings but they are all part of the package at no extra cost. I also print up all readings and vows for the ceremony so that you don't have to worry about any of that.
If you have other things which you would like for your ceremony I can help find a supplier for most things couples suggest. If you have some grand plans, let's talk about them and we can make almost anything happen.

Get Expert AdviceDo celebrants have a backup celebrant in case of emergencies?
Hello. I was wondering what happens if our celebrant is sick or something happens and they can't come to our wedding on the day? Do they usually have a backup celebrant in mind for this sort of thing? And how does it work with the legal side, would our marriage still be legal if another celebrant performed the ceremony? Thank you!
Jeff Hobbs Celebrant
It is relatively easy for a celebrant to pass a ceremony over to another celebrant in case of illness or accident. While you might miss some of the spirit of the ceremony you have worked on with your chosen celebrant, you will still be legally married. A lot of celebrants belong to associations which mean they can reach out for a replacement if needed. I have two celebrants reasonablly close just in case but have never had to use them.
Is there anyway possible to get married without witnesses
Can you be married without witnesses in the same room. As I have anxiety issues and I don't do very well around other people.
Jeff Hobbs Celebrant
Unfortunately the law states that there must be five people present at a wedding. However, there are ways to make such a situation less stressful if you wish to invite two close friends who understand your anxiety and are able to sit with you in a way which allows you to feel comfortable. The wedding could take place in your loungeroom or around a dining table almost like a casual chat. Share some food and, when the time is right, the legal wording could be read out loud. Then all that needs to be done is sign the paperwork. Find a celebrant who has the time to sit down and help you work through the anxiety of the situation. They should be able to assist you with making the ceremony as calm and relaxing as possible.
Do celebrants travel and how far?
Hello. We're considering getting married in the country but are wondering, if we find the celebrant we love, if they generally travel to do weddings. How do they price for that?
Jeff Hobbs Celebrant
Each celebrant would have their own limits and policies. I love travelling to new locations and seeing what different venues are like. Other celebrants prefer to turn up to the same venue week after week. I tend to consider petrol costs and add them to my price for travelling. If overnight accomodation is needed I talk to the couople to see what is availalbe in their area and would put the price up to cover some of that cost.
