About

I have come into this role after 35 years in the profession of Social Work. During that time I worked as a marriage and family counsellor, marriage educator and a manager of marriage support programs in Melbourne, Central QLD and more recently fifteen years in Central VIC. For twenty five of those years, I have been the CEO of two major organisations which support marriage and family life. I have been married for 36 years, and we have two children who now work as health professionals.

Do we need a marriage celebrant?

Can we exchange vows on our wedding day , and just get registered at the registry office on separate day- and therefore not require a celebrant? And if so- is this more cost effective? Thank you

Paul Fogarty

Hello Bessieloo,

To be married in Australia, couples need a celebrant who is authorised under the Marriage Act. These celebrants include:

-Ministers of religion of recognised denominations

-State and Territory Officers who have the function of registering marriages in their state/territory ( often staff of BDM Registries)

-Marriage Celebrants registered by the Commonwealth under the Marriage Celebrants Programme.

Couples do need an authorised celebrant to be married in Australia.

Bessie L

can a marriage celebrant marry a family member?

I went to a wedding and the celebrant was the grooms father. Is this legal?

Paul Fogarty
